Local Collective to launch Pecha Kucha Night: San Luis Obispo
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The architects of M:OME Laura Joines-Novotny and Tom di Santo; as well as curator Catherine Trujillo and Enrica Lovaglio, have brought the global phenomenon Pecha Kucha Night to San Luis Obispo. Pecha Kucha Night (PKN) is a presentation format in which (mostly creative) work can be easily and informally shown. Pecha Kucha Night vol_01 will be held Friday November 9th at the Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo.
Japanese for "the sound of conversation," Pecha Kucha Night is a digital presentation event where each participant is given 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide to share their works and ideas freely, giving a total of 6 minutes 40 seconds before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. With no specific theme or topic, six presenters are provided a forum to render their creativity into a free-flowing non-stop time slot. No breaks. No pauses for questions. One right after another.
Pecha Kucha (pronounced Peh-Chak-Cha) Night was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham - Klein Dytham architecture in Tokyo, as a place for designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
"We brought Astrid Klein to come speak at Cal Poly as part of our lecture series. We were struck by the ingenuity of Pecha Kucha night as presented to us in her lecture. It was a wonderful event, bringing creative people both famous and not from multiple disciplines together to have fun, share ideas and make contacts. When one of our students attended PKN in Bangkok, we discovered the idea was spreading (80 cities on every continent to be exact.) We wanted to be the 81st. Global brought local."

To be held four times a year, the local collective is dedicated to seeing the Pecha Kucha philosophy and conversation included as an element in San Luis Obispo’s cultural landscape. They have garnered support from designers, artists, students, professionals and musicians who are all committed to joining the San Luis Obispo conversation.
