PKN SLO: Volume 8 is ready for public consumption


PKN SLO collective has been hard at work, preparing another fun, informative, visual and audible phenomenon they refer to as “cultural karaoke”.

Presenters for PKN vol_08 are:

  • Ashley Schwellenbach & Steve Miller
Ashley is Arts and Entertainment Editor at New Times. Steve works as both New Times staff photographer and freelance photographer. They have been collaborating on large-scale projects for the paper’s Spring and Autumn Arts issues for the past year and a half, exploring topics ranging from the muses and artistic creativity, the relationship between artists and death, and the disconnect between contemporary society and words. Their current project is a collaboration with local artists to produce public art installations and performances over the course of the summer.

  • Garry Eister
Garry is a composer who writes for unusual instruments, including some very rare resonator guitars whose manufacture he has commissioned."  Eister has a Ph.D. in music composition from UCSB.  Garry’s music has been performed by the Emerson String Quartet, Kent Nagano, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the SF Guitar Quartet, the SLO Mozart Festival Orchestra, and many others. Eister's compositions have been heard in numerous venues around the world, including in Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, and the Kennedy Center. His work has been broadcast on NPR, PRI, many European national radios, German TV and CBS. Eister has concertized with Daniel Lentz, Steve Reich and John Schneider's Harry Partch Band. He has recorded with Linda Ronstadt. His works are available on SONY Classical, Archer Records, and Eister Music.

  • Kenneth Haggard
Kenneth is a registered architect in the states of California and Florida with 32 years of experience in urban design and architecture. For the past 26 years, he has been a principal in San Luis Sustainability Group (SLSG). Known as a pioneer in passive solar design, Haggard has designed numerous residential and commercial projects with an emphasis on making the best use of the energy and materials available on-site. In 1972, he served as architect and senior researcher for the first passive solar house in California. In 1978, he co-wrote "Passive Solar Handbook for California," a guide for architects interested in the passive solar design. With colleague Polly Cooper, Haggard helped renew serious interest in straw bale construction in California by designing the first-permitted straw bale house in the state.

  • Brian Lawler
Brian teaches courses at Cal Poly in color theory and quality control, new technologies, digital printing, and typography. He is a graphic arts and photographic industry expert with over 30 years’ experience in photography, typography, and printing. His love of photography has taken him all over the world. Whenever and wherever he travels, he makes panoramic photographs. Lawler builds his own camera mounts out of wood for his panoramic work, each one a specialized product for a combination of camera and lens. His photographic work is widely published online and in print.

  • Joey N. Shimoda
Joey earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 1988. In 1985 he interned at Morphosis Architects in Santa Monica, and was instrumental in the design and execution of drawings for Kate Mantilini Restaurant and the Sixth Street House. Both projects received Progressive Architecture Awards for that year. On Valentines Day 2000, he founded Shimoda Design Group. A studio founded on a multi-disciplined platform that seeks to bring quality design, innovation and technical excellence in projects of every scale. In addition to the core staff of six, the studio has the ability to assemble an optimum team of design professionals according to each clients needs. They include planners, landscape architects, graphic designers, lighting consultants and marketing professionals. Currently the firm has ongoing projects in Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

  • Olga Apolinarska
Olga earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 2009. She is from Poznan, Poland and continues to work as a DJ at KCPR (since 2005). KCPR, Cal Poly's non-profit volunteer-run radio station, provides its listeners with alternative programming which entertains and informs. Programs on KCPR attempt to open local minds to alternative points of view and provide diversity on the airwaves. KCPR’s initial Broadcast was in the Fall of 1968. According to Brad Brown, the first words on the air were: "Is THIS the damn switch!?"

  • Ira Amerson & Shane Stoneman
Ira lives and works on the central coast of California. His photos have been featured in most major surf magazines and many surf related websites.

Shane is a surfer, shaper, musician and painter. He has created a line of surfboards that is both artistic and practical. He knows from experience how subtle designs work under the feet and he also knows the qualities of A-grade product. He creates boards that are unique, hand-crafted, and well-tested. Drawing and painting is something he has loved ever since he was a child. He still gets to it every chance he can.
