Presenters are:

Daniel L. Slusser

Specializing in mid to late nineteenth-century American history, Daniel has published articles on the caning of Charles Sumner and wrote his master’s thesis on the education of the Wright brothers. His interests within the subject of history are broad and include economic, political, and technical history. Daniel also enjoys cycling and metalwork. He currently resides in San Luis Obispo, California with his wife and two children.

Helen Swanagon

Helen Swanagon has worked as an RN in San Luis Obispo for the past 32 years. Thirteen years ago she became interested in the care of the dying and began a course of study through the Sacred Art of Living Center in Bend Oregon. For the past seven years she has worked at Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, the local MediCare certified not for profit hospice, where she has the opportunity to tend daily to the challenges of those facing the end of life.

Youssef Alaoui-Fdili

Youssef Alaoui-Fdili is a Moroccan-American Polish Latino. His family and heritage are an endless source of inspiration for his varied, dark, spiritual and carnal writings. He has an MFA in Poetics from New College of California. His writings have appeared in Exquisite Corpse, 580 Split, Carcinogenic Poetry, Midwest Literary Magazine, Tsunami Books and Red Fez. youssefalaoui.tumblr.com

Justin Abraham Johnson

Being a Central Coast native, nature has been an integral part of my life. Discovering new environments have been exciting and rewarding experiences. Whether the obscure world of some insect, the hilly landscape of SLO, or the world of my two sons, these encounters have shaped and continue to inform my artwork. Working in various media, synthesizing the representational with the abstract, a print of the local environment shows through in some way. Justin received his BA in Art Studio from UC Santa Barbara in 2004. He currently lives in SLO with his wife Heather, and sons Jude and Liam. justinabrahamjohnson.com

Enrico Como

Italian born designer, Enrico Como, is co-founder of SPaCe Architects, with offices in LA, NYC, Boca Raton and Milan; specializing in high-end retail, high-end residential and restaurant design. SPaCe recently completed projects in Beverly Hills (MISSONI Flagship) and New York (the SCAVOLINI SOHO Gallery). Enrico received a Masters in Architecture from Cal Poly, Pomona through the Ecole Special d’Architecture (ESA) in Paris. His thesis work focused on the rehabilitation of vernacular architecture of Ticino, Switzerland, where he lived and worked from ‘93-‘97. This Swiss experience led him to later co-found (along with architect/professor Tom Di Santo) STUDIO_TICINO, a study abroad program that is now entering its third year.

Elizabeth Scott-Graham

Liz has been involved in environmental and community issues for over 40 years. While Executive Director of the SLO Botanical Garden she got involved with the Botso film project as a volunteer fundraiser. She says, "Botso's story is so compelling I just couldn't say 'no'."

Dr. Wachtang "Botso" Korisheli Wachtang “Botso” Korisheli's life story has become legendary -- including a wise goodbye from his famous father just before the latter’s execution in the Soviet Union when Botso was just 14, then his own imprisonment under the regimes of both Stalin and Hitler. Botso’s new life eventually brought him to a Morro Bay, California, where he taught and inspired thousands of children on not just how to become great musicians and artists, but how to become remarkable human beings

Director/Producer Thomas Walters has produced and directed more than 50 educational films and two internationally distributed documentaries, "Therapeutic Community" and "Evolution of a Group." A thirty minute version of his current documentary "BOTSO" won the coveted Audience Choice Award at the 2010 Fallbrook Film Festival.

Writer/Producer Hilary Grant is a veteran documentary producer whose network television credits include the multi-Emmy nominated "Unsolved Mysteries," the Sci-Fi Channel hit "Sightings" and "Against All Odds." She is also a former circus clown and print journalist, with bylines in publications including "People," "Seventeen," "Ms." and "Westways."

Chris Burkard

I am 24 years old and live in the small town of Pismo Beach, California. I have served as a freelance photographer for various publications and a staff photographer for Surfer magazine and Surfline.com. My inspiration comes from landscape photography and unique lighting situations. The Lost Canyon Ramblers

The Lost Canyon Ramblers are: Roger Siminoff, Mandolin; Robert Keane, Guitar; Peter Morin, banjo; and Charlie Kleemann, bass. The group is known for its excellence in bluegrass music, with each artist bringing extraordinary musicianship to the mix. Bios:

Annamarie Fella:

Annamarie Fella grew up in Detroit, Michigan and is the daughter of famous graphic designer, Ed Fella. In 1992 Annamarie moved to Los Angeles and completed her Teaching Credential in Math from Cal State University. She taught high school math classes in L.A. for 10 years, while creating her art on the side. In 2007 she moved to Los Osos and currently teaches Geometry at San Luis Obispo High. She continues to make art and show it in galleries around the San Luis Obispo area.

Peggy Mandeville:

Peggy Mandeville has a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. She has worked in the field of transportation and land use planning for over 25 years working in both the private and public sectors. For the past 14 years, she has been employed by the City of San Luis Obispo. Peggy commutes to work by bike using an existing segment of the Railroad Safety Trail.

Larry Hollis:

Larry Hollis began taking surf trips down the Baja Peninsula in the early 1970s before there was a paved road to the tip. The places he likes best are still down the unpaved roads. One of his favorite spots requires a multi-day mule ride into the canyons of the Sierra de San Francisco where 7000 year old gallery cave paintings await the adventurous.

Jim Jacobson:

Jim’s art is usually abstract, often minimal and sometimes architectural in nature. It varies in size from something as small as a desk weight or as large as a 25 foot high sculpture. He has always been fascinated with mobiles and enjoys conjuring three-dimensional ideas and rotating them in his mind until there is balance and excitement. A great deal of his work incorporates spheres, circles and curves. Jim’s sculptures are inspired by the colors of Joan Miro, Alexander Calder’s mobiles, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s repetitive, rectangular elements and his signature “Cherokee red”. Local geographic features or landmarks are often integrated into his sculptures. Site-specific research allows him to incorporate icons or images reminiscent of individual locations. Research is the crux of his sculptures as he probes into the people, the place, and the purpose whether it is public art or privately commissioned.

Don Choi:

Don Choi is an architectural historian who uses the camera as a tool for investigating the built environment. He received his A.B. degree in economics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in architectural history from the University of California, Berkeley. He has been awarded fellowships from the Japanese Ministry of Education to study at Kyoto University and from the Japan Foundation to fund research at Tokyo University. Dr. Choi’s research focuses on the architectural history of the modern world and he is currently working on a book manuscript on major themes in the architecture of Japan since 1850.

TROPO:

TROPO exploded onto the San Luis Obispo electronica scene in 2009 delivering all original late night beat non stop dance sets. The unique trancy violin, ambient guitar, oscillating bass and synths, and throbbing beats make TROPO a one of a kind live experience.

Ben Ross:

Ben Ross is a student of many trades. Earning degrees in architecture and construction management, his passion for sustainability continues his drive to seek new designs with long-tern potential. An avid outdoorsman, his favorite hobbies include architecture, construction, design-build, wood and metal working, glass and furniture making and photography. His photography works to combine all his ideals together into one cohesive element. Lately Ben has dedicated his time to night photography – the capturing of light and movement not just in a moment, but through time and space.

Don Seawater:

Don Seawater was born in January, 1954, at McClelland Air Force Base in California. He created "Great American Folk Toys" wood toys, was the production manager at California Cooperage, then became manager of Pacific Access Lumber 1979. Since 1997 he created Pacific Coast Lumber, making local logs into local lumber. He is also a lecturer in Natural Resource Management, Cal Poly, teaching wood science. Don has been the subject of many studies about using and marketing urban wood, and small sawmill operations.

His motto: “Creativity is good.”

Suzanne Parker:

Alabama native Suzanne Parker has worked in public relations for over a decade. She served 5 years as the National Network Coordinator for the Bureau of Land Management. Later Ms. Parker led a team focused on energy and natural resources issues for New Mexico’s largest public relations firm. Parker joined Chevron Mining in 2005 and in late 2008 she assumed the role of Chevron’s Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager for the Central Coast of California. Ms. Parker and her spousal equivalent, Wally, spend their free time with 5½ year old twins Dylan and Natalie and two spoiled dogs.

:: Turko Semmes

Turko Semmes has lived in SLO County since 1974. He graduated from the Cal Poly Architecture Department in Construction Engineering. He is the founder of Semmes & Co Builders, who are the leading local builders in sustainable building techniques. He cofounded the California Straw Building Assoc. (CASBA) and SLO Green Build. He is addicted to Passive Solar Design but is improving with D.O.I.V.M.

:: Mike DiMilo, Integrated Solid Waste Management (nonprofit organization.)

Presentation title: What Happens To All That Stuff? Mike di Milo is the education program coordinator for the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority (IWMA). This is his 15th year of providing education programs. Mike and his staff deliver about 700 recycling presentations and field trips each year to children and adults throughout our county. Mike graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, with a degree in Natural Resources Management, and has lived in San Luis Obispo since 1978.

:: Nancy Stromberg Sowaal

Artist Nancy Sowaal’s first artistic claim to fame was winning a prize in the Oakland Tribune’s “Aunt Elsie’s” column at age 10. In the early 1950s Sowaal attended the College of Arts and Crafts, now known as California College of the Arts. Her paintings have been shown at the S.F. Museum of Art and the De Young Museum. After two years she left art school and worked for a while as a window decorator and began a five-month hitchhiking trip around Europe. She returned to California College of the Arts and earned an M.F.A. She studied under the tutelage of Richard Diebenkorn, who had a great influence on her early work. She began her career as an art teacher, where she stayed for 37 years, returning to painting a few years before her retirement. She lives and paints in Grover Beach, California.

:: Dr. Joe Sabol

Joe Sabol is a retired Cal Poly Professor and an active member of the Central Coast Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers (CRFG). He is the President of CRFG, Inc. the largest amature fruit growing organization in the world. Joe helped to start a very unique “High School Apple Grafting Project” about 12 years ago where the local CRFG Chapter members visit more than 25 schools every year to teach the art and science of grafting apple trees. More than 2500 junior high and senior high school and Cal Poly students take part in this annual event.

:: Rick Davis, Artist and Sculptor

Rick Davis has been making art since the 1950s. He has shown in many Southern California venues, and in many different media, from ceramics to printmaking, and sculpture. Davis is now making animated sculptures called Crankers. He earned an M.F.A. at U.C.L.A. and has taught at U.C.L.A., and Santa Monica College. He has been blessed with a loving and understanding family that includes two beautiful daughters, and two beautiful Granddaughters.

:: Adam Monkaba, Smitten

There’s a girl for Adam somewhere, and a son he hopes. And there’s a train ride maybe, that could change the course of him. Perhaps a wedding day with wedding bells, or a little girl with a little message too big to fit in his little ears.

Every painting is an experiment, an emotion and a discovery. Sometimes, they just work – quick and clean, while other times they are painful and messy; some are more of a joke than anything else. 1. TJ Esser__photographer + Grand Lake_musicians

TJ Esser: An exposition of the introspective photography, showcasing architecturally inspired images of the built world.

Pursuing photography serves as a way for me to explore architecture and helps me visually
explain to others what I observe and notice through my eyes. Buildings encompass more
than raw materials… they embody varying levels of thought, craftsmanship, and creative
energy. My intention is to encourage people to notice and appreciate the subtleties of
meaningful design that are often overlooked. I work to achieve this by way of a creative use
of cropping, composition, and editing down; thus simplifying each idea to its simplest form.

Grand Lake:
Grand Lake is the Oakland born ensemble expressing the epiphanies and songs of Caleb Nichols. Since 2008 the rock group has shared the stage with such bands as OKGO, Rogue Wave and the Thermals, as well as recorded two EPs and a full length album called Blood Sea Dream. Grand Lake's musical and lyrical juxtapositions weave in and out of each other to tell a story familiar to all – the facing-down of demons on the long drive home.

2. Michael Reddell_a study of gesture and expression_artist

Michael Reddell coaxes human expression from bronze, pewter, and steel. Concurrent with art making, he worked in newspaper, steel fabrication, and tech writing in Seattle and San Jose until 2003 when he cut the umbilical cord to make art full time on the central coast. His next local show is at McMeen Gallery in the Spring.

3. Nick Liepman_film

Nick Liepman, a San Luis Obispo native, was raised by a loving family and fantastic cinema. Now 18 years old, he's had a hard time keeping his movie making habits to himself. From creating comedy sketches on Youtube with his brother and cousin, to entering several short films into the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, Nick has had a lot of time to practice. However, he is even more excited about everything he will learn when he leaves for college next year. In his spare time, Nick also has a passion for writing, Improv comedy, and music.

4. Lorianna Fletcher_cardiologist

Lori Fletcher is a board-certified cardiologist with subspecialty training in noninvasive cardiac imaging.

After completing her medical training journey around the country, including New Orleans, North
Carolina, and Beverly Hills, she moved to the Central Coast in 1998 to join Coastal Cardiology . She has made her home here and keeps active with a busy practice and raising her two children. She enjoys travelling and keeping fit by participating in triathlons and running events. Her next goal is the Paris Marathon in 2011.

5. SLO County Bike Coalition_non profit

The San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition exists to make the Central Coast a safer and more livable community by promoting biking and walking. We accomplish this by advocating for bicycle facilities countywide, teaching bike smarts, bike maintenance, and providing free bike parking.

Located in downtown San Luis Obispo, the Coalition headquarters are filled to the brim with bike culture, knowledge, and feature organizational elements that are 100% unique to our space, with most things being repurposed/custom made to reflect the creativity that bike culture encourages. As the biking hub in San Luis Obispo County, the Bike Coalition seeks to promote sustainable mobility for a better future.

6. Dave Van Mouwerik_Swimming to Oxnard

Swimming to Oxnard
Thirty years ago Dave jumped into a pool, and discovered a life aquatic. Since then he has regularly baptized himself in pools, lakes, and oceans. One day in 2010 he realized that he needed to swim to Oxnard.

7. Joe Rank aka KRANKY_The Almost Lost Art of Cartoons

Joe Rank, AKA: “KRANKY” editorial cartoonist. B. 1955, Rockford, Illinois. First published 1994, Rockford Register-Star. From 2005, relocated to California's Central Coast and is the regular contributor to the Five Cities Times-Press-Recorder.

His cartoons have been published all over the world, and examples of his work have been included in the national compilation “The Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year” nine times.

8. Valerie Johnson & Al B Blue_Blues + Joe Bachelor_artist

Valerie Johnson & Al B Blue
Valerie Johnson, former lead singer with Big Brother and the Holding Company caused one reviewer to exclaim, “Janis is back!” Al B Blue’s guitar/dobro style travels from the Mississippi Delta to Jamaica and back to Funkytown.

Valerie Johnson performed with award-winning Deanna Bogart and the Holmes Brothers. Al B Blue joined Big Black and the Congregation, then toured with Curtis Mayfield. When not performing they are busy getting kids involved in music with their program Blues for Kids. They make music that walks right into your heart and shakes hands with your soul.

:: Tod Rafferty_Maintenance and the Zen of Motorcycle Art. Tod has lived 32 years in the county, following relocation from Topanga Canyon, Mill Valley, Atlanta and Avon, Ohio respectively. His journalism career included staff gigs at Cycle News, Big Bike and Cycle Guide and freelance work for Cycle World, Motorcyclist and Motorcycle Classics magazines. He’s the author of several books on Harley-Davidson, Indian, Ducati and “The Encyclopedia of American Motorcycles.” He edited The Achievers, Central California’s Engineering Pioneers, in 2004. Rafferty lives in San Luis Obispo with his wife Bronwyn, the Principal at Oakley School in Santa Maria.

:: Kristina Gill_Paleoethnobotany. Kristina is an archaeologist and graduate student at UC Santa Barbara. Her Ph.D. research in California archaeology is focused on how prehistoric people used plants for food, tools, medicine and rituals among complex hunter-gatherer-fishers. Her research area includes Santa Cruz Island in the Santa Barbara Channel, and also extends into the interior Chumash region where rock art has the potential to elucidate some ritual uses of plants. Paleoethnobotanical studies, combined with traditional archaeological research can provide a more complete picture of past lifeways, and changes in human interaction with our environment over time.

:: Marcie Hawthorne_Muralist. Marcie is a San Luis Obispo artist who has been working as a muralist, gardening/natural history book illustrator and plein aire painter for thirty years. She has earned an academic degree in biology from Duke University, a fine arts degree from California College of Arts and Crafts, and has also received additional training in medical and biological illustration at Duke Medical School. Marcie has combined a love of nature and art in a unique way with her residential and public art mural painting. :: Russell Swanagon_Storyteller_“Breaking and Entering: An interpretation of Jack and the Bean Stalk.” Russell is a professional storyteller and educator. He is a lecturer in the Liberal Studies department at Cal Poly and at Brandman University. Russell received his Master’s Degree from East Tennessee State University in Storytelling with an emphasis in applications in education. He serves as an artist-in-residence, performs thematic programs for schools and special events and facilitates workshops in the applications of storytelling in education and organizations. He believes that the folktales are not good because they are old; they are old because they are good.

:: Duane Heil_Building Innovator. As President of Vitruvian, Duane Heil has designed and implemented the systems that make the Vitruvian processes unique and uncommonly efficient. A third generation builder in California, Duane had the opportunity to apprentice with essentially every trade. This training was rounded off with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Business Pre Law (emphasis Civil Engineering) from Arizona State University. He has successfully managed the DW August Company, general contractors, for 20 years, building many very high-end custom and spec homes, as well as commercial and retail structures. Duane is passionate about building the most energy and cost effective buildings with state-of-the-art methods and materials.

:: BK Richard_Octagon Barn Center_Land Conservancy. BK Richard grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania and moved around the United States for college. He enjoyed a thirty-year career in the aerospace industry, working in systems engineering and project management. After retirement and moving to San Luis Obispo in 2003, he joined the board of the Land Conservancy and has been active working on land use policy and the Octagon Barn Center Project. He has also worked on energy issues and solutions by co-teaching a course at Cal Poly and through a County advisory board. Michael Hannon

Michael Hannon was born in California in 1939, and began making poems sometime in 1959. He has been widely published in journals and anthologies, both here and abroad. He is the author of many limited letterpress editions, and four full-length collections. For many years he has enjoyed the friendship and collaboration of visual artists. Michael lives in Los Osos, California with his wife Nancy Dahl and is the father of three grown sons, Dylan, Jason and Colin. Kenneth Rexroth said of Hannon's work: "A very good poet indeed, and certainly one of the few Tantric writers in any language who is both profound and witty."

Adrienne Allebe

The mesmerizing topography of the central coast against the backdrop of encroaching development has been Allebe’s most constant source of inspiration. In her most recent body of work, she juxtaposes imagery from reality (the natural and constructed landscape) with imagery from her imagination. Allebe received a BA from UCSB and an MFA from Cal State Long Beach. She currently resides on the central coast where she works as an artist and teaches drawing, design, color, painting and art appreciation classes at Cuesta College, Allan Hancock College and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Allebe loves what she does.

Christine Moser: Christine is a 5th year Architecture student at Cal Poly. She has been dancing in one form or another for most of her life, and discovered blues and lindy hop in 2007. Since then dancing, teaching and DJing the blues has quickly become her passion, and she travels nationally to DJ as well as teaching and DJing regularly at Drop Dead Blues in SLO.

Sean Graff: Sean is a 5th year Architecture student at Cal Poly. He was first introduced to dance with the Salsa club on campus three years ago, and since has enjoyed ballroom and most recently blues dancing. Though he has only been exposed to blues for a few months, it has quickly become his preferred style, and he has had the pleasure of enjoying the teaching and social dancing venue of Drop Dead Blues.

Heather Springer: Heather Springer is a 3rd year Business Management student at Cal Poly. She started swing and blues dancing at the beginning of her college career and has been dancing for almost three years now. She is currently the weekly lessons coordinator for the Cal Poly Swing Club and will take up the positions of Vice President and Booking during the next year.

Mark Carpenter: Mark is a recent Cal Poly grad receiving a BS in Software Engineering and a Minor in Theatre. He's been swing and blues dancing for 5 years now and teaching and dj'ing for almost as long.

Anne Stahl

Anne Stahl was born in Germany in 1968 and worked and lived in Dublin, Ireland. She moved to Los Angeles in 2000.
Stahl’s work distills the complex spirit of a landscape, and the infinitely sophisticated ecology that sustains it. Ultimately, each piece captures some fragment of the landscape’s power until the larger body of work coalesces to express its deepest essence.

Brynn Albanese

Café Musique’s Brynn Albanese has toured and performed world-wide sharing her exhilarating style with audiences from Boston to the Netherlands. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, her first musical endeavor was that of concertmaster for Maryland’s Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. She has also served as concertmaster and soloist for the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra, Boston Philharmonic, and as principal second and soloist of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. Brynn is a fearless musician unrestrained by a single discipline. She savors the opportunity to discover new musical experiences in all genres.

Christopher W. Allen

Christopher W. Allen is a LEED accredited designer at the San Luis Obispo firm of Kornreich Architects, and an award-winning furniture designer. Chris is a graduate of the Architecture program at Cal Poly and is currently working towards his architectural license. CWA Studios specializes in the design and manufacture of beautifully crafted modern furniture and custom cabinet systems for kitchens and other storage/display needs.

Bob Hill

Bob Hill is the Executive Director at The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County. He earned his Bachelor’s from UC Santa Cruz and a Master’s in City and Regional Planning from Cal Poly. Bob also attended Sierra Institute field school while in college, which both solidified a passion for the mountains and also fueled a growing feeling that a professional career dedicated to conservation would be both possible and necessary. Bob likes to hike, ski, bike, rock climb, and canoe as ways to peacefully experience the natural world. He lives on Terrace Hill in San Luis Obispo with his wife, Jaime, and their twin sons, Albert and Oscar.

Ron Ruppert

Ron Ruppert is chair of the biology department at Cuesta College. He also teaches courses in Human Anatomy, Natural History, Life Science and Desert Biology.
Ron was first introduced to Osteology (bones) at Chaffey College in Southern California. Transferring to CSU Fullerton he earned a Bachelor’s in biology, a teaching credential in science and a Master’s in biology specializing in herpetology (reptiles). He has a life-long interest in lizards and skeletons.
Ron is married to Shaunna Sullivan and has 4 children. They are ages 24 years to 16 years.

Dr. Heidi Freeman

Dr. Heidi Freeman has been a practicing OB/GYN in San Luis Obispo since 2004, and has owned her own practice, Seven Sisters OB/GYN, since 2006. She is currently the chief of French Hospital's Obstetrics & Gynecology Department and is a Board Certified Diplomate of the
American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She lives in San Luis Obispo with her husband, Patrick, and two children, Abby and Cole.

|| David Settino Scott ||

Raised in an Italian-American blue-collar family in Southern California, David Settino Scott became interested in art while serving in the US Navy. Following his studies in San Bernardino and Claremont where he studied painting with Hilda Mohle, David tried to adapt to the contemporary art trends that prevailed in the 1960s and 1970s. But these failed to “capture his heart,” and he withdrew from the art world to take up flying and work as a model maker on Hollywood films and screen credits in "Star Wars" and "Caddy Shack." David has been a full time artist since moving to San Luis Obispo in 1985.

Matt Brynildson, Master Brewer at Firestone Walker Brewery, will speak about the art of making award winning beer on the Central Coast. Matt and the Firestone Walker team have been rewarded for the passion of their art, winning international gold and silver medals year-in and year-out at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado, the World Beer Cup, The European Beer Star Award, Australian International Beer Awards, The World Beer Championships, Men’s Journal, and The California State Fair.

The Steynberg Gallery will be selling on the night of Pecha Kucha the Unfiltered Double Barrel Ale out of a Firkin Keg, with a portion of the proceeds going to Haiti relief efforts.

|| Sandy Stannard ||

Sandy Stannard is an architect and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She has a B.A. in architecture from U.C. Berkeley and an M. Arch. from the University of Washington. Professor Stannard was one of the faculty advisors for Cal Poly’s 2005 Solar Decathlon entry, which received third place overall in this U.S. DOE/NREL sponsored international design/build competition. She currently teaches an undergraduate design thesis studio entitled “architecture + nature” which involves guiding advanced students in the conception and realization of a comprehensive architectural design project with an emphasis on carbon neutral/zero energy design. Professor Stannard is a LEED accredited professional.

|| Janet Allenspach ||

Local artist Janet Allenspach is Program Coordinator for the non-profit Community Action Partnership’s Liberty Tattoo Removal Program. Janet graduated from Sonoma State in Photography, but has painted endangered species most of her career. In her paintings, she often combines Aboriginal symbolism with her own imagery to tell a story.

Recently, Janet received a grant from the CA Council for the Humanities to interview and photograph nine of her clients who are ex-gang members. These in-depth stories and photos share the struggles and triumphs of a vulnerable population trying to change their lives in a positive fashion to rejoin our community.

Ryk Kluver is a local building contractor. For the past 30 years he has specialized in the restoration of historical homes. One of his many hobbies is the collection, restoration, and recreation of vintage wooden surfboards, from solid Hawaiian “Olos” to 1950’s balsa guns. His boards are not only historic… they are amazing works of art.

Jameson is a guitar composer in the tradition of John Fahey and Leo Kottke, but with the pathetic minimalism of punk rock, and the experimentation of free jazz. His solo finger-style guitar concerts consist of short, dense improvisations as well as tightly composed vignettes he thinks of as sad toys. In 2009 he made his first short film, The Big Feet. Jameson holds a Master's Degree from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Timo Beckwith- the confluence of creative diversity and production design

Timo has a passion for many forms of artistic expression and the cross pollinating influence they have on each other. He studied sculpture at California College of the Arts, receiving a BFA with distinction in 1972. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, lighting, mask making, photography, production design, body painting and original world fusion music performance and recording. Timo has exhibited and performed throughout the state.

Doug Jackson – Incompleteness

Doug Jackson is an architect and an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Cal Poly. His current academic and professional work focuses on the production and theorization of architecture that transforms through user-interaction. Doug’s work has been widely published and exhibited, both nationally and internationally. Previously he was a principal along with Wes Jones in the internationally-acclaimed office of Jones, Partners: Architecture (J,P:A). In addition to his architectural and academic work on transformation, Doug continues to pursue a number of related photographic studies that focus on the issues of artificiality and incompleteness.

Amanda Wallace – SLO Oddities

Amanda Wallace, currently resides in SLO as a local graphic designer, self proclaimed book nerd, letterpress novice, and recent graduate from California Polytechnic State University. With a goal to eradicate Papyrus, a very long “design” bucket-list, and a lack of knowledge of knowing when to give up, she lives by the motto: refine, refine, refine... until you run out of time. Don’t worry, she always stops to enjoy the mundane and search for undiscovered oddities. Likes: Perfectly kerned type, the smell of a well aged book, Bogie (her dachshund MLD), tandem rides. Dislikes: Christmas in July, hornworm tomato eaters, style-biters.

Larry Rinzel - Joyous Intentions

Larry Rinzel is the author of Searching for Mind-Over-Matter: Extraordinary Experiences of an Ordinary Joe. He teaches Engineering at Cal Poly State University in Calfornia and is a Certified Hypnotherapist. In his spare time, Larry plays banjo backstage, rescues kitties from heating vents, spends his vacations rewiring his sister’s mansion, and still finds time to run a successful hypnotherapy practice.

Chloe Adeline White – Figurative Sculpture

Chloe White obtained a BA (hons) in Fine Art from the University of the West of England in England in 1995. She has since exhibited her paintings, prints and sculpture at galleries in Britain and the USA, including The Royal West of England Academy of Art, The Cube Gallery, The Christmas Gallery, Jamaica Street Studios and San Luis Obispo Art Center.

Her sculptures seek to express universal human experiences and emotions. Notions of identity, personal journeys and role-playing are explored in her provocative animal/human creatures. Her theory is that animals express feelings purely, and that at our best and our worst, we have much in common with them.

Robert Arens – Strangely Familiar: Small Buildings and Unbuildings

Robert Arens has a background that blends architecture with landscape architecture, technology with design, and professional activity with teaching.
Trained as an architect and a landscape architect, Robert has held a variety of roles on projects ranging from stage sets to massive urban developments. Robert’s design work has been recognized by the University of Michigan and the Detroit Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
He joined the Cal Poly faculty in 2005, following professorships at the University of Detroit, Kansas State University and University of Colorado. His most recent project is a grant from the Office of Naval Research to develop emergency shelters using green materials.

Mark Freear – Practical uses for the Tricycle from around the world

Mark Freear painter/designer, makes his home in San Luis Obispo and travels the world for inspiration.

Richard Green – Musician

Richard Green is a longtime Central Coast favorite, featured at such major events as the Live Oak Folk Festival, sharing stages with the likes of Steve Forbert, Bo Diddley and many other national acts. Born into a musical family, Richard learned many different instruments. On his 2009 release, “Better Days,” he keeps the songwriting in the family, sharing lyric credits with brother Matthew.

Local stars with whom Richard Green has played include cellist Bob Liepman (of Bob & Wendy), pianist Brett Mitchell, and drummer Dean Giles. Vocal support comes from Richard’s wife Lori Olson-Green, longtime pal Paul Hobbs, and Cindy Giovacchini

Ashley Schwellenbach & Steve Miller

Ashley is Arts and Entertainment Editor at New Times. Steve works as both New Times staff photographer and freelance photographer. They have been collaborating on large-scale projects for the paper’s Spring and Autumn Arts issues for the past year and a half, exploring topics ranging from the muses and artistic creativity, the relationship between artists and death, and the disconnect between contemporary society and words. Their current project is a collaboration with local artists to produce public art installations and performances over the course of the summer.

Garry Eister

Garry is a composer who writes for unusual instruments, including some very rare resonator guitars whose manufacture he has commissioned." Eister has a Ph.D. in music composition from UCSB. Garry’s music has been performed by the Emerson String Quartet, Kent Nagano, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the SF Guitar Quartet, the SLO Mozart Festival Orchestra, and many others. Kenneth Haggard

Kenneth is a registered architect in the states of California and Florida with 32 years of experience in urban design and architecture. For the past 26 years, he has been a principal in San Luis Sustainability Group (SLSG). Known as a pioneer in passive solar design, Haggard has designed numerous residential and commercial projects with an emphasis on making the best use of the energy and materials available on-site. In 1972, he served as architect and senior researcher for the first passive solar house in California. In 1978, he co-wrote "Passive Solar Handbook for California," a guide for architects interested in the passive solar design. With colleague Polly Cooper, Haggard helped renew serious interest in straw bale construction in California by designing the first-permitted straw bale house in the state.

Brian Lawler

Brian teaches courses at Cal Poly in color theory and quality control, new technologies, digital printing, and typography. Joey N. Shimoda

Joey earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 1988. In 1985 he interned at Morphosis Architects in Santa Monica, and was instrumental in the design and execution of drawings for Kate Mantilini Restaurant and the Sixth Street House. Both projects received Progressive Architecture Awards for that year. On Valentines Day 2000, he founded Shimoda Design Group. A studio founded on a multi-disciplined platform that seeks to bring quality design, innovation and technical excellence in projects of every scale. In addition to the core staff of six, the studio has the ability to assemble an optimum team of design professionals according to each clients needs. They include planners, landscape architects, graphic designers, lighting consultants and marketing professionals. Currently the firm has ongoing projects in Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Olga Apolinarska

Olga earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 2009. She is from Poznan, Poland and continues to work as a DJ at KCPR (since 2005). KCPR, Cal Poly's non-profit volunteer-run radio station, provides its listeners with alternative programming which entertains and informs. Programs on KCPR attempt to open local minds to alternative points of view and provide diversity on the airwaves. KCPR’s initial Broadcast was in the Fall of 1968. According to Brad Brown, the first words on the air were: "Is THIS the damn switch!?"

Ira lives and works on the central coast of California. His photos have been featured in most major surf magazines and many surf related websites.

Japanese for "the sound of conversation," Pecha Kucha Night is a digital presentation event where each participant is given 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide to share their works and ideas freely, giving a total of 6 minutes 40 seconds before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. With no specific theme or topic, presenters are provided a forum to render their creativity into a free-flowing non-stop time slot. No breaks. No interruptions. One right after another. It is similar to a Salon from times past, with organizers encouraging event participants and the audience to gather, discuss and socialize.

Held several times a year and originally devised and shared by Tokyo based Klein Dytham Architecture, the local collective is dedicated to seeing the Pecha Kucha philosophy and conversation included as an element in San Luis Obispo’s cultural landscape. Darren Clarke was born and raised in England and was performing in pubs and clubs in London as young as age 13. Renowned as an outstanding guitarist, record producer, published songwriter and mentor, Darren Clarke made San Luis Obispo his home 15 years ago & founded Music Lab in 2003, now known as Modern Music Academy. MMA specializes in Guitar, Song Craft & Production. Darren has a degree in Contemporary Music & Music Business & he thrives on training others to be successful musicians.

Donna Duerk
I grew up in North Carolina and have had a garden since elementary school and a camera since my first Brownie Hawkeye at twelve. Architecture at Cal Poly brought me to California in 1981. I got serious about photography in an underwater class with Mike Francis who said, "Make sure that the fish's eye is in focus!" The underwater film gear got stolen, the world turned digital, I turned into a Master Gardener, and the world of cacti and succulents opened a fascinating new venue of exploration in addition to the usual flowers. So, here I am.

Barry Goyette
Barry Goyette is a photographer/designer based in San Luis Obispo. He completed his studies at Cal Poly in 1989, and specializes in photographing people for advertising. Goyette also provides interior and graphic design services for a number local commercial clients. His photography and design work is also regularly seen in association with a variety of non-profit organizations including the Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo, Ballet Theatre of SLO, DeyoDances, Transitions Mental Health, and The San Luis Obispo Symphony.

Goyette is a regular contributor to the local arts scene, producing numerous exhibits of contemporary photography over the past 18 years.

Jeff Jamieson
Jeff Jamieson was born in 1960 and has been making art for 32 years.
He has concentrated on small-scale works for the last 5 of those 32.
He is still finding and seeing good new things.
He will show some of the new small-scale works at David Patton in Los Angeles in April.

Bill Mulder
We are a loose confederation of bicycle riders that do it from a different perspective. Tall bikes are nothing short of a parade when riding down a street. One has to try really hard not to have a positive reaction to a tall bike passing by. We strive to inspire individual creativity, community giving, and having a good time while doing it "Posse Up" and ride high with us!

Inga Swearingen
While she readies her album for a 2009 release, Inga Swearingen continues to grow and evolve as an artist; playing everything from jazz vespers in San Francisco to Tanglewood with James Taylor and a Prairie Home Companion. She incorporates her experiences to enhance her skill as a singer who conjures with her audience. She concludes, "I want an audience to feel uplifted and connected. I want them to know that they can make music more a part of their lives. It's a wonderful profession, I love what I do."

Tracy Taylor
Tracy’s studio occupies the second story of a century old rural general store surrounded by vineyards, in Edna Valley. Although she specializes in watercolors, she also loves to paint in oils. Self taught, Tracy sold her first painting at fourteen.

While living in Hawaii early in her career, she became fascinated with painting the local tropical fish and since then has sold hundreds of thousands of aquatic watercolor posters worldwide.

Besides farming I'll build stuff. Then I'm going to find land and develop some cool places to live. And sometimes I'm going to travel and I'll play with my kids a lot."

Sumaya has been studying the Arabic language for the past year. Recently returning from Damascus, Syria, she spent a four-month stint learning to speak Arabic more proficiently, absorbing the culture, and acclimating with humor to the ways of the city.
She has worked for DoubleTake magazine, filmmaker Errol Morris, and Plazm magazine. Her photography has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times. She graduated from the Art and Design department at Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo.

Local painter Mark Bryan has become known as a deadly satirist taking on the villains of the day in surprising and delightful fashion. He is also known for his whimsical surrealistic work and pieces that evoke wonder and ask the big questions. Bryan’s work has been widely exhibited and featured on numerous satirical and political web sites across the US and internationally. The work has also appeared in many publications and magazines as illustration and cover art.

In 2007 Bryan was given a feature article in Juxtapoz magazine. This fall, Bryan’s well known “Mad Tea Party” painting will be appearing in a new movie. “Lake View Terrace”, starring Samuel Jackson.

Enrica Lovaglio currently teaches digital arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She is known to inspire and stimulate her students, pushing them to be outstanding and individual. Born on the French border in the Italian city of Bordighera, her childhood took her to Egypt, Borneo, Singapore, France and then Spain as her family followed her father's career in deep-sea exploration. This exposure to diverse cultures increased her visual sense and led to a passion to discover new forms of expression through design.

In Italy, Enrica studied architecture where beauty, function and meaning all intersect in a magnificent sculpture that becomes part of a living city. In France, she studied town planning which deepened her understanding of the context of architecture and expanded her ability to design on the larger scale of urban environment. In the United States, she has studied multimedia arts in order to extend her design knowledge into the virtual world.

Kellie Wenzel has been performing since she was 12 years old and has been in a number of musicals and has sung regularly before large audiences in the Bay Area and on the central coast. She has toured Africa twice with a band called Quest and currently teaches piano and vocal at Grand Central Music & Conservatory. She has composed her own songs and sings regularly at Atascadero Bible Church. Kellie has had a longstanding love for Jazz music and drummer Jesse Hesch invited Kellie to sing with a local band called NewjaZ. With Kellie singing, NewjaZ can cover songs by artists like Norah Jones, Jane Monheit, Diana Krall, and many others.

SLOMobility is a multidisciplinary team of student engineers and planners from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo hailing from every region of California. Focusing on sustainable mobility, the original SLOMobility team won the student segment of the Los Angeles City of the Future challenge for 2007. In 2008, SLOMobility looked to the future of San Francisco by incorporating sustainable mobility, land use and design; approaching the design challenge with a wide variety of leadership, professional, and competition experience and a passion for the built environment.

Lisa Deyo, choreographer and 2006 winner of an ART INSPIRES! Individual Artist’s Grant, is the product of a diverse background as a dancer. Originally from San Luis Obispo, she went on to New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), returning to San Luis Obispo to form her company, Deyo Dances. For 10 months last year, Lisa was dancing and teaching ballet, jazz and modern at the Ramon Solé Studio in Barcelona, Spain.
Deyo Dances exists in varying forms, whether on the stages of Russia or in the aisles of Vons grocery store, using Lisa's diverse dance resources to tell a story and reflect the human condition.
